The Sister Cleophas Lecture 2018

by Anne Kostecki

The Sister Cleophas Lecture is an annual event held by Loyola University Maryland, and it "features prominent women who embody the ideals Sr. Cleophas [a former president of a previous institution] espoused, including scholarship, leadership, and artistic ability," as stated on its website. In 2018, the campus welcomed Gabby Douglas, the gold medal Olympic gymnast and author. With such an engaging and world-famous speaker, the event organizers wanted something special for the promotional materials.

Since Gabby is a gymnast, I suggested a hard pastel drawing; which would emulate the gymnast's chalk and the sweeping, gestural nature of the sport. And, since the title of the lecture would be "Girl On Fire," I wanted to highlight Gabby's pose with pastel "flames." The clients loved the illustration, and we opted for a clean, direct look with the typography that matched the warm color palette. The materials included an 11 x 17 inch poster, a 5 x 7 in bifold VIP invitation with RSVP card and envelope, two versions of a promotional postcard, digital signage, and social media promotional materials.
